So why did I become natural? Since I got my first relaxer as a little girl I have always struggled with the health of my hair. It was short, thin, and completely damaged. If you can think of a meme making fun of a girl's hair for how short and horrible it is, that was probably me. I may be over exaggerating just a tad but that's seriously how I felt because of how unconfident I was about it. I tried to hide it with braids and eventually weaves but the underlying issue was still there. My mom was the first to take the natural plunge and of course she convinced me to follow suit. May 2012 I got my last relaxer right before my senior prom. October 2012 I did the big chop. This just may have been the best decision of my entire life.
Since becoming natural my hair has improved tremendously. It is already longer in less than two years than it has been since I first got a perm. It is SUPER thick (I break combs). And it is healthier than ever. It took a while for me to get the hang of doing it and taking care of it and it is a lot of work but at the end of the day it is definitely worth it. Probably my favorite benefit is the fact that I can scratch my hair at any time without worrying about the burning sensation of a relaxer.
Being natural isn't for everyone. I have heard the best compliments and the worst insults about my hair. But at the end of the day, not everyone is going to love what you do. As long as you are comfortable with yourself, that's all that matters. I absolutely am in love with my hair now. I love the thickness. I love my nappy edges (despite my mom's protests). I love my curl pattern. And I love how my hair is unique to me. I don't look like everyone else, I look like me. Yes I sometimes wear protective styles, like braids, but underneath all of that I am still The College Natural.
